I have to admit it… I’m not a huge fan of Halloween. I love dressing my girls up, pumpkins, and the excitement of the night, I just dread the Trick-or-Treating part. I’m not against candy, it’s just that my oldest daughter Kyla has a peanut allergy. That means we go trick-or-treating and have to throw out 95% of her loot. I cringe every time someone puts a Snickers in her bag. I try to make the best of a bad situation. I buy safe candy and sneak it in as we go, so when I am sorting it, she is left with a decent amount of goodies.
Being a parent of a child with a food allergy is scary. Your way of looking at food changes and there is always a constant worry in your life. Thankfully, there are resources that can help make life easier. Here are some of places that have helped me:
www.vermontnutfree.com -They sell peanut/nut free chocolate and candy that is delicious!
www.flourgirlbakery.com- Flour Patch Bakery right here in Montclair is a peanut/nut free bakery and makes beautiful cakes and delicious treats.
www.foodallergy.org- The Food Allergy and Anaphalaxis Network. This is the place to really educate yourself about food allergies.
www.jeeto.com – sells really cool stickers and patches to stick on lunchboxes and backpacks to remind teachers of your child’s allergy.
